Sum of the parts

Original photogram 77 x 127cm

The PCR machine is reduced to its components and traced as a photogram. The mysterious ‘black box’ is opened up, but what we see is merely the evidence of its dumb parts. It’s a kind of portrait, but maybe questions the idea of a portrait. Does any portrait tell us all we wish to know about the subject? In this case we can be certain that the PCR machine is very much ‘greater than....the sum of its parts’!
